A Complete Teardown of Oakter WiFi Smart Plug

Oakter WiFi Smart Plug is a small, Wi-Fi-enabled power adapter that plugs into a regular wall outlet and controls the flow of electricity to connected devices. It can be used to remotely control appliances and electronics, set schedules, and monitor energy usage.

The Oakter WiFi Smart Plug is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can control it with your voice. You can also use the Oakter app to control the plug from your smartphone or tablet.

The Oakter WiFi Smart Plug is a great way to automate your home and save energy. Here are some of the things you can do with it:

It is available in two models: a smaller model that is suitable for small appliances (Smart Plug Mini) 1.3KW at 230V and a bigger one (Smart Plug Plus) which can handle 3.6KW at 230V which is suitable for larger appliances.

Let me dive and show you some of the internals of both the Oaktar WiFi Smart Plugs.

Oakter Smart Plug Mini

It comes with a nice packaging.

To open the plug remove the pins.

After opening the enclosure carefully, you will see the PCB as shown below.

Any WiFi Smart Plug has majorly 3 sections, one is the power supply section where AC mains is converted to DC to power the whole circuit, WIFI controller and a relay circuit. In some advanced WiFi Smart Plug you may also get the energy monitoring but it is not available in Oakter Wifi Smart Plug.

You can see a 10A AC relay is used for switching the WiFi Smart Plug ON/OFF. Near Relay Two LEDs are also given which indicates connectivity and relay status.

6621JS is the PWM AC to DC Converter it converts AC to DC 5V using transformer you can see on one side of the PCB.

Another Linear regulator (AMS1117 – 3.3V) is used for 5v to 3.3V which further powers the ESP8266 module.

You can see in the image below AI-Thinker’s ESP8266 module is used for WIFI connectivity and Relay control.

The hardware is pretty simple but the challenge remain how to make it lowest cost possible and yet reliable as it is a consumer electronics product for mass market.

Oakter Smart Plug Plus

In the Plus version there are small changes. The circuit is over all same just the PCB size is bigger, Relay size is bigger as this version handle more load, everything else remains same.

You can see the relay used here is 30A AC relay.
