Recently I did a teardown of Oral-B Electric Toothbrush, at the same time I purchased the Xiaomi Electric Toothbrush as well. It is always good to compare two similar products from two different brands.
The main different between Oral-B an Xiaomi Electric Toothbrush is that Xiaomi has rechargeable battery, two motor speed modes and Micro-USB port for battery charging.
I have purchased this Electric toothbrush from Amazon and it costs around 700 INR. Comes in a nice packaging with Micro-USB cable included for charging.
I think chargeable batteries are much more economical and environment friendly than single use cells, i think it’s good decision to have a rechargeable battery. Even better if the rechargeable battery is replaceable as well so that after battery life is over one can change it and use the product for more time.
This is not manufactured in India, you can clearly see, it is imported and is Made in China.
It has a button to ON/OFF and speed control. It has two vibration mode, high and low., LED indication is also there to show in which mode it is working. Battery indication is also there which will be green when charge is full.
Opening these kind of products are always challenging, these are built with use a through mindset. So, they don’t make it easy to open (repair).
I had to remove the top shaft and only after removing that I could pull the internal mechanism outside, which was basically carrying everything.
You can see in the image below, the tip has the vibration motor. Motor is connected to internal circuit via two wire connection.
At the edge of the handle you get a micro USB port. and if you open it, you can then access the internal mechanism which can be pulled outside.
PCB has a couple of main blocks. Starting from the right hand side, 2 wires are coming from the micro USB connector, which after protection diodes goes to the battery charger circuit, the IC used for battery charging has marking 4054A which is probably a linear battery charger like this:
After battery charger, the power rail goes to the another 6pin IC which is a LDO for generating 3.3V DC for MCU and Motor. It has marking LCCLB.
After that on the left side, SO16 IC is the MCU, the marking is removed from the surface. BUt, any low cost MCU could be used. Besides that one switch is there which is used for ON/OFF and speed control. On the PCB, two LEDs are used for motor speed indication and one multicolor LED is used for battery status and charging status indication.
You can see all the major components on the PCB in the image below.
There is nothing on the back side of the PCB. The PCB is fixed on the plastic case via glue.
This electric toothbrush uses a is a 3.7 volt Li-Ion Cell, 350mAh, 1.295Wh capacity. The cell is directly soldered to the PCB and charging happens via Micro-USB port.
